I disagree with your conclusion in the end. Stalin's concessions to China proved vital for Russia, china today is their only ally, against a united West, it proved vital for them, maybe even saving them from demise. if Manchuria was made a socialist state, it would eventually meet the fate of GDR in Germany, uniting with China after soviet collapse. in turn, Russia benefited from an ally over a temporary territory.
Calling Rus "mediaeval russia" is as stupid as calling Roman Empire "mediaeval Romania".

Edmond Taylor wrote a book titled Fallof Dynasties: the fall of the old order, 1905-1922. It is a wonderfall parallel to the series you are discussing.
Putin was there
2:03:22 the Stuart’s weren’t English they were barely a Scottish dynasty Charles II and James II spent most of their young adult lives in exile in France in Louis 16ths court. The failure of the house of Stuart is two fold one they never truly acclimatized to England and the English form of kinship two they were barely Scottish and so were hatred by everyone. I’d go so far to say that the house of Stuart didn’t really exist after 1542 with the death of James V and had become a political cover for the ambitions of the house of Guise through his daughter Mary (queen of Scot’s) to subvert the house of Valois through marriage and claim the throne of England so their blood would rule over all three kingdoms. The failure of Mary as a monarch destroyed Guise’s grand plan leaving behind a dynasty connect by blood to two others but culturally didn’t have much of a clear identity of its own. This contradiction of a Scottish/French royal family ruling over England would cause problems sooner or later no one could have predicted they would happen within a generation After the reign of the first Stuart king of England.
Damn AM, looking back at this video in comparison to the content you put out today in mid 2024, you've improved so much! Not to say your older content is bad, not at all! Everything you've put out has been and is great! But your public speaking ability, presentation style, the flow and structure of your lectures and conversations have improved quite a bit. I was motivated to make this comment after realizing how many times you say "um" hahaha, and again, absolutely no indictment, this stream along with all your old and current content is great, indispensable even, but man, those um's haha. Keep up the great work, keep improving, and thank you very much for everything you do to keep the modern unwashed masses informed and connected with our history

Columba made an interesting point about Macchiavelli and the political and religious context in Italy at the time. He was a man of his time, after all.
Very good
What would Henri gain by becoming King? Being assassinated? Being forced into constitutionalism? The man was wealthy as hell and lived a life full of pleasure and bliss. People have a tendecy to assume people only matter as much as their position in the hierarchy. But what if the hierarchy is a stupid revolutionary post modern hierarchy? I rather die holding my beliefs than be remembered as an opportunist who traded his beliefs for power. He did not need the job, so he chose his honour. Thank you for telling his story in the depth it deserves.
Anything about Robert E Lee will always get my attention.
As someone with extensive knowledge of medieval and crusader history I can appreciate some of what is being discussed here, particularly how the film makes the speakers reflect on the setting and characters. But I am baffled that people who are well read in this history so fundamentally misunderstand what a movie is and what a movie review should be. The primary flaw of this discussion is straw manning KoH into being some sort of attempt at documenting a genuine representation of 12th century outremer and french culture and society. That is definitely not a goal or even an attempt of the film. The main character is a bastard born in France, which should make this obvious, when the real person was a legitimate noble from the kingdom of Jerusalem. KoH is an exploration of deontology vs teleology, cultural and religious relativism and multiculturalism, faith and devotion to loved ones. Yes the moral of the story is certainly futurist postmodern liberalism, but that still makes it a great film for what it is. I am left with the impression that these guys, who simply disagree with religious relativism and multiculturalism and who know much about the historic setting of the movie, are just *disappointed that the film is not more historically accurate and promoting themes that happen to match their own subjective opinions*. Which would be totally fair to criticize KoH on, as long as it is in the context of simply disagreeing, and not using straw man arguments to say the movie is objectively bad or a failure. I have to praise Scott for having the integrity and courage to present Saladin and the muslims so favorably, especially so recently after 9/11, when islamophobia permeated the western world even more than today. Try to imagine if the film was made to the ideals these speakers seem to have, how would that have made a better movie? We can understand and appreciate the mindset of the knights who lived in the immediate build-up to the 3rd crusade without agreeing with them at all. I strongly oppose and even ridicule and pity anyone who imagines that the culture and values of that time should at all be promoted today.
Yes! The Slavic/Germanic border was much further West than what I used to imagine - not over towards Berlin as I once thought but with the Arbotriti tribe which was virtually in the Schleswig -Holstein area and also with Mecklinburg and the House or dynasty of eagles.
Harshness which they suffered under 20-30 communist regime might be in some part revanchism of certain group of which Cossacks had very low opinion of and actually banned from joining their communities. Not claiming that it was primary reason or anything, but it might have been additional factor.
Excellent
You gotta love the dynamic between these two... Columba's carving his way to make a few jokes here and there and AM is very stoicly trying to get through his narrative. Great stuff...
The ancient Veneti called themselves "Venetkens."
AM 's very polished voice reminds me of the man on the "Antiques Roadshow" who is an expert on Russian Imperial artefacts especially of the Faberge type - could almost be the same person!
It is a shame how Napoleon III's reign ended. He, in my opinion, deserved a better ending.
I feel more bad for napoleon I than iii.
The Apology of William of Orange to King Philip the Second is a prelude to many declarations of freedom, independence and revolution the following centuries. When you read it, you hear the first whispers of Jeffersons declaration 200 years later.
I believe the Illyrian revolt was Arminius's NIMBY event. He had risen to knighthood and commanded of axillaries during that conflict, but he could no longer favor or tolerate Rome ruling over the Cherusci.
War is a political maneuver and it is great that Apostolic Majesty explains so much history that way. Excellent histography
This channel is better than 4 years of university lectures i attended. Thank you
That was dense.
What a ridicolously academic take mainly on if Rus was centralized or unified or not from 862
Great stuff! Wish you had a podcast.
You guys are top class on Portuguese history. Also a very politically neautral apporach to history. Neither right, nor left.
Superb
This is one of my favorite movies, but not because I think it's perfect, mostly for the high fidelity visuals of a medieval period and the overall ambience. It definitely has a lot of problems: casting, historical innacuracy, presentism, but I stlll enjoy watching it
2:21:00 yes it is quite true that the Gulag Archipelago did not shut down after Khrushchev attained power.
Why always the POMS Btards knews Ukraine history. Ukrainian does NOT exist as a NATION till 17th century. JUST like USA, Australia, NZ and Canada.
Why the painfully lengthy introductory remarks?
Thanks
I think the analysis of the reasons Britain actually joined the war IE short term contemporary domestic political considerations is highly illuminating. Its always baffled me why the UK chose to join. The whole concern for the autonomy of small nations was always total BS. Eg Less than 15 years earlier the Empire crushed the Boer Republics in South Africa. Even when I first encountered WW1 in school history at <16 it never made sense why the UK joined. Even then it was clear that the Entente itself never obliged Britain to fight with France. Of course with 20:20 hind site, the catastrophe WW1 was for all participants and Europe's place in the world is just obvious.
Let's take a shot of whiskey every time someone says"UM". Oh crap. 3 seconds in and I'm drunk.
im Ethiopian but im intrested in the rus because of first play aoe4 lol and second the connection to byztanium
I hear "Byzantine Empire" which never existed in history, and I close the page. But before doing it, pollice verso to the video.
Thank you for mentioning the Heidelberg Catechism of 1563 and Frederick III, Elector Palatine! It has a beautiful opening; 'Q. What is your only comfort in life and in death? A. That I am not my own, but belong-body and soul, in life and in death-to my faithful Savior, Jesus Christ.'
Just found this series. It's awesome. Great work. If you fancy a war of the roses one od love to be involved :)
Fascinating topic. You're right, it does get a bit complicated, but you did a good job clarifying it.
Incredible work
excellent work

As discussed in this program - I used think that there might have been a connection between the word "taxi" and the family who established the postal system in Europe - the Thun and Taxis family - but there isn't. The Thun and Taxis originated in northern Italy and in Italian "tasso" can mean either a badger or a yew tree. The name of the family derives from one of these two - I forget which!

Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us, this was very interesting. This is usually such an obscure period.
